TEMPO.CO, JakartaUnlike in European or American countries, winter in New Zealand comes early from June to August. There are various winter activities to do in New Zealand, from the typical skiing and snowboarding to chasing after the southern lights. Tourism New Zealand provides several guides for winter activities in New Zealand as follows:

1. Winter activities

During winter in New Zealand, tourists can take part in thrilling activities such as skiing and snowboarding on breathtaking slopes, exploring and enjoying mountainous scenery, and experiencing cozy après-ski.

New Zealand is one of the best places for first-timers. The South Island resort provides quality instructors and a variety of terrain to suit all levels of skiing ability.

Apart from skiing and snowboarding, tourists can also explore the South Island's majestic glaciers, with special tours in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. Meanwhile, for those who are more adventurous, you can climb famous glaciers such as Franz Josef and Fox, with their stunning blue ice formations and deep crevices.

2. See the whale migration

If you visit New Zealand in winter, don't miss the opportunity to watch Humpback whales migrating from Antarctica to the warm waters of New Zealand to breed. There are several places to see the whale migration, including Kaikoura, one of the few places in the world where you can easily see sperm whales. Tourists can join the Great Kaikura Whale Count or take a whale-watching tour with Whale Watch Kaikura.

Tourists can also encounter whales playing at the beautiful Hauraki Gulf Marine Park. Known for its rich biodiversity, this marine park offers a wonderful opportunity to see a variety of marine life, especially during the winter months.

3. Relax in hot springs or hot pools

Wintertime in New Zealand is perfect for enjoying the warmth of natural hot springs and hot pools. There are several best locations to soak, including Onsen Hot Pools in Queenstown, which offers private pools with views of the Shotover River and a snowy mountain landscape.

You can also enjoy a soak in mineral-rich hot springs at Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa, inspired by Mori healing traditions. Meanwhile, the Omarama hot tubs offer a sustainable soaking experience with wooden tubs and fresh mountain water.

4. Stargaze and see the southern lights

Winter is the best time to catch a glimpse of New Zealand’s auroras, especially in June and July. One of the best destinations to see Aurora is on Lake Tekapo. With clear night skies and minimal light interference, Lake Tekapo offers unrivaled views of the Southern Lights.

Other destinations include Stewart Island, or Rakiura in the Maori language, which means ‘glowing skies,’ a name very fitting for this internationally recognized International Dark Sky Sanctuary.

Wairarapa in Wellington is also one of the easiest dark sky destinations to reach in the world. The reserve is open to the public every evening and is easily accessible by walking, cycling, or driving. If you want to find a place to watch the stars clearly and comfortably, Wairarapa is the perfect choice.
