Jokowi Urges Boost in Coffee Production as Export Demand Continues to Rise

TEMPO.CO, JakartaPresident Joko Widodo or Jokowi visited coffee farmers and joined the harvests in Kembahang Village, West Lampung Regency, on July 12, 2024, emphasizing the importance of boosting Indonesia's coffee production.

Indonesia has 1.2 million hectares of coffee plantations, both robusta and arabica, with West Lampung contributing the largest share at 60,000 hectares. At least 90 percent of those in the region is robusta variety.

While the President did not specify harvest quantities from Kembahang Village, he stressed the need to increase national productivity per hectare, currently between 1-2 tons, which falls short of some international competitors reaching 8-9 tons.

Jokowi urged Agriculture Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo to prioritize the coffee sector. He also suggested improved farming practices, including proper care, fertilization, and potentially denser planting, as key factors in boosting productivity.

The former governor of Jakarta the link between higher yields and improved well-being for coffee farmers. He further highlighted the importance of developing downstream industries like processing, packaging, and export readiness for coffee products.

According to the Statistics Indonesia (BPS) report in 2024, Indonesia produced 794.8 thousand tons of coffee in 2022. There is no current data available on the national coffee production.

South Sumatra emerged as the top producer in 2022, contributing 26.72% of the national total. No current data on the national average coffee prices was available.
