Indonesia Pursues Clean Hydrogen as Global Demand Expected to Rise

24 June 2024 09:25 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs stated that the government is currently developing five hydrogen projects. "To produce green and blue hydrogen, we utilize the country’s significant renewable energy resources and carbon storage capacity," said the ministry’s deputy, Jodi Mahardi on, Wednesday, June 19, 2024.

The clean hydrogen projects include the Batam Bintan Green Hydrogen Cluster and the Sumatra Clean Hydrogen Cluster. These two projects are expected to have 25-100 kilotons per year capacity and will operate in the first quarter of 2027.

In Cilegon, the government is also building a clean hydrogen cluster, which is expected to start operating in the third quarter of 2027, but its capacity is still unknown. The North Sulawesi Green Ammonia Cluster is expected to reach 500 kilotons per year capacity and start operating in the first quarter of 2030. Last, the Sumatra-Java Blue Ammonia Project is built with a 730 kilotons per year capacity.

On the same occasion, Jodi explained that Indonesia has the second-largest geothermal potential in the world and a potential solar power capacity of more than 200 GW. The hydrogen sector presents new opportunities for Indonesia to utilize its abundant energy resources to encourage bigger economic growth.

According to him, as various countries strive to achieve net zero emission targets, global hydrogen demand is expected to more than quadruple between 2020 and 2050. In 2023, there were 1,418 clean hydrogen projects announced globally with investment value reaching US$570 billion.
