TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto be representing the country at the summit on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which will be held in Amman, Jordan. He landed at the Queen Alia International Airport in Amman on Monday morning, June 10, 2024.
Upon his arrival, Prabowo was welcomed by Jordanian Minister of State for Prime Ministry Affairs, Ibrahim Mashhour Al Jazi, Amman Governor Yasser Al-Adwan, Amman Mayor Yousef Sawarbeh, and Indonesian Defense Attaché to Egypt, Colonel Kav Aria Sanggita Saleh.
According to the Defense Ministry’s spokesman Brigadier General Edwin Adrian Sumantha, Prabowo was sent directly by President Joko Widodo or Jokowi to attend the summit.
On May 30, Indonesia accepted an invitation from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi, Jordanian King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein, and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to partake in the summit titled "Call for Action: Urgent Humanitarian Response for Gaza".
The three leaders had taken the initiative to invite countries to attend the summit in Jordan on Tuesday to discuss strategies to end the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The summit was scheduled to last for one day.
“This conference is being held in line with the call for a ceasefire in Gaza, with the aim that heads of state can identify ways to strengthen the international community's response to the humanitarian disaster in Gaza,” said Edwin.
According to him, Indonesian representatives at this conference are expected to make a real contribution to the joint efforts to overcome the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Previously, Prabowo stated that he planned to use the summit to offer assistance that Indonesia could prepare, including peacekeeping troops, field hospitals, health workers, and victim evacuation.
“I will coordinate with the UN Secretary-General and the leaders of the countries in the region so that Indonesia can implement our offer of assistance,” Prabowo said last Friday.
Prabowo further emphasized that Indonesia remains firm in its stance that the conflict resolution in Gaza must be through a ceasefire and negotiations. “Indonesia also firmly supports the independence of the Palestinian people, the two-state solution, and all efforts for an immediate ceasefire.”
Editor's Note: The title had been changed. Previously, it said "On Gaza," but now it had been corrected into "In Gaza."
