Jakarta Police Sends 1,626 Officers to Secure Protest at State Palace

6 June 2024 11:30 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Members of the Labor Party and the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI) are staging a rally today at 10:00 a.m. in front of the State Palace. The police are deploying 1,626 officers to secure the protest.

The Central Jakarta Metro Police Chief, Sr. Comr. Susatyo Purnomo Condro, stressed that all personnel involved in securing the demonstration are not carrying firearms.

According to reports, Susatyo said, around 500 people are participating in the demonstration. "If the number of protesters increases and escalates, roadblocks will be put in place," he told Tempo on Thursday, June 6.

Among the traffic plans being prepared are road closures at the Harmoni traffic light, Jl. Merdeka Barat, Jl. Perwira, Jl. Merdeka Utara, Jl. Abdul Muis dan Jl. Merdeka Selatan, and the Sarinah traffic light.

The workers are protesting against Government Regulation (PP) No. 21/2024 on the amendment of PP No. 25/2020 on the implementation of public housing savings; the rejection of the unified tuition fee (UKT), the BJS Health Standard Inpatient Class System (KRIS) and regulations on the outsourcing of workers.

Susatyo said that expressing opinions in public is the right of every citizen as regulated by law. However, when expressing an opinion, one must, of course, pay attention to the rights of other people.
