1. University Tuition Hike Cancellation, Observer: 'A Populist Decision But Won't Solve Problems'
Education observer from Semarang State University (UNNES), Edi Subkhan, said the cancellation of the tuition hike is the government’s populist step. According to him, President Joko Widodo or Jokowi wishes to avoid making unpopular policies at the tail end of his term.
Thus, Jokowi requested the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Makarim to cancel the tuition hike policy. "Politically, this decision is populist and pleases many people, but does not solve the fundamental problems," Edi Subkhan told Tempo on Wednesday.
2. New Zealand, Indonesia Strengthen Commitment on Counterterrorism
Indonesia's National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of New Zealand strengthened their counterterrorism commitment through the 2nd meeting of the Joint Working Group on Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism.
BNPT Head Mohammed Rycko Amelza Dahniel, in the agency's statement, received on Thursday, stated that the two countries have the same concern about the issue of online radicalism that targets the younger generation.
3. Indonesia Forms Contingency Plan for Citizen Protection in Middle East, Anticipates Conflict Escalation
All representatives of the Indonesian government in the Middle East have prepared contingency plans for the safety of Indonesian citizens amidst the potential Gaza conflict expansion, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Israeli offensive against the Palestinian group Hamas in Gaza has prompted resistance groups from other Middle Eastern countries to join the fight as a form of solidarity with the Palestinian people. Countries bordering Israel and Palestine have also been drawn into the conflict.
