World Footballers Call for All Eyes on Rafah on Social Media

29 May 2024 19:53 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaSocial media is now abuzz with the call "All Eyes on Rafah", highlighting the atrocities of Israel's attacks on the Palestinian people. Various elements of society are also echoing this call, including celebrities, politicians, and the world's top footballers.

Quoting from a Palestinian news agency, Quds News Network, on its X account, a number of the top global footballers were seen calling for "All Eyes on Rafah" via their respective social media. Some European club stars also posted the "All Eyes on Rafah" template on their Instagram stories.

“Football stars worldwide display support for Palestine and Gaza on their official accounts, condemning the Israeli occupation's recent massacres in Rafah,” Quds News Network wrote on Tuesday, May 28, with a screenshot of the footballers' Instagram stories.

The global football players include Arsenal player, William Saliba; Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson; Paris Saint-Germain striker Ousmane Dembele; Liverpool and French defender, Ibrahima Konate; Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny; and Al Ahli club striker, Riyad Mahrez.

Galatasaray club midfielder, Hakim Ziyech, also showed his support for Palestine. The Moroccan national team player raised the Palestinian flag while celebrating his team's victory in the Turkish league a few days ago.

Not only global footballers, several Indonesian football players also expressed their support for Palestine by uploading the Instagram Story’s template on their personal accounts. They are Rizky Ridho, Dendy Setyawan, Muhammad Ferrari, and Ilham Rio Fahmi.

"All Eyes on Rafah" Slogan

The "All Eyes on Rafah" slogan is a call for the world to pay attention to the plight of people in Gaza following the Israeli attack on Rafah, the refugee area that was previously designated as a ‘safe area’ for Palestinians since the Oct. 7, 2023 attack.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched a massive attack on Rafah on Sunday, May 26, killing at least 45 people, mostly children, and injuring dozens of others.

The attacks have continued until now. Israel argued that the area was a Hamas compound in order to eliminate the ammunition depot based on their intelligence data.

The All Eyes on Rafah call has drawn the global spotlight. It is at the top of the trending topic on X with more than 997,000 posts as of Wednesday, May 29 at 12:30 Western Indonesia Time (WIB). The hashtags "Gaza Genocide" and "Free Palestine" are also among the trending topics with more than 343,000 posts and 171,000 posts, respectively.
