Indonesian Police Hunting for Drug Network Member Linked to Aceh's Legislative Candidate from PKS

29 May 2024 08:19 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian police are hunting for 'A', a member of a drug network linked to Sofyan, an elected legislative candidate for the Aceh Tamiang Regency Legislative Council (DPRK) from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS).

It has been revealed that Sofyan financed his campaign with money from the sale of the drug methamphetamine (methylamphetamine or desoxyephedrine), or known as shabu-shabu in Indonesia.

The police believe the fugitive, who goes by the initials A, is currently living in Malaysia.

"We have arrested Sofyan. Now we just need to find A, who is in Malaysia," the National Police's Criminal Investigation Department's (Bareskrim) Narcotics Crime Unit chief, Brig. Gen. Jen. Mukti Juharsa, said in a written statement on Monday, May 27.

Sofyan is known to have a drug network in Malaysia, of which A, an Indonesian national, is a member. Earlier, three people with the initials S, R and I, suspected of being Sofyan's accomplices, were captured at Bakauheni Port in Lampung.

Mukti said the Bareskrim would coordinate with the Malaysian police to hunt down A. Since the police have obtained A's full name, Mukti is optimistic that the police will catch him soon.

Sofyan is suspected of possessing, capitalizing on, and controlling the trafficking of 70 kilograms of methamphetamine in a case first uncovered in South Lampung on March 11, 2024. Shortly after his arrest, police were able to locate Sofyan's hideout after three weeks on the run.

Sofyan is charged under Article 114(2) in conjunction with Article 132(1) subsidiary Article 112(2) of Law No. 35/2009 on Narcotics.
