TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Some countries experience extreme heat, while others in the northern parts of the world have long winters with below-zero temperatures. Countries in the Canadian and Siberian hemispheres experience some of the longest winters in the world. In some cities, the cold weather is so extreme that it could reach -40 Fahrenheit (-40 degrees Celcius). Citing The Discoverer page, here are the five coldest cities in the world:

1. Ottawa, Canada

Ottawa's average air temperature in January reaches 13.6 Fahrenheit or around -10 degrees Celsius. Residents of Canada's capital take advantage of the cold temperatures by trekking the 93 miles of trails in the Greenbelt area around Ottawa.

2. Vladivostok, Russia

In eastern Russia near the border of China, you will find the city of Vladivostok with an average air temperature of around 8.4 Fahrenheit (-13 degrees Celsius). This city is surrounded by the sea which prompted many maritime museums. This walkable city offers breathtaking architecture and assortments of Asian cuisine.

3. Novosibirsk, Russia

In January, the city's air temperature reaches 3.6 Fahrenheit or -15 degrees Celsius. Infamous for its Ice Town from December through March, Novosibirsk is the third most populous city in Russia. Tourists flock to the winter entertainment options that this city offers, with fantastical fairytale-themed ice sculptures.

4. Astana, Kazakhstan

Astana or Nur-Sultan is the second coldest capital city in the world with an average air temperature of 3 degrees Fahrenheit in January. Many residents went ice skating on the Ishim River, which stayed frozen for five consecutive months. Astana is a modern city with futuristic architecture, dazzling mosques, and an abundance of shopping and entertainment complexes. A great time to visit Astana is during the Christmas season

5. Winnipeg, Canada

The city is located on a vast prairie, where winds blow from the Arctic in winter. The average January air temperature is above 2.5 degrees Fahrenheit, but it feels like -40 degrees Fahrenheit when accompanied by the winds.  One of the most famous destinations in Winnipeg is the Oak Hammock Marsh where you can search for animal tracks and enjoy the crisp air.
