TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The issue of fare hikes for the Jabodetabek or Greater Jakarta Commuter Line (KRL) has re-emerged. State-run commuter line operator PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KCI) clarified that it is still waiting for the government, in this case the Transportation Ministry, to make a decision.
Broer Rizal, KCI's director of operations and marketing, said the fare adjustment policy is entirely within the government's authority. The KCI only acts as the train operator, while the tariff policy, operating costs, and infrastructure maintenance are the responsibility of the government.
“We are just the executor, who implements what the government decides,” Rizal said when met after a press conference in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, April 23.
He did confirm that the plan to adjust KRL fares had been discussed with the Transportation Ministry, although he claimed to have no idea when the fare increase would take effect.
In early 2022, the Transportation Ministry conducted a survey regarding the increase in KRL fares. The ministry’s spokesperson Adita Irawati said that the government was still reviewing the plan.
“Demand is already high. Profits have started to level off. The people’s mobility has indeed shifted, so we have to study it,” she said.
Fares for the Greater Jakarta KRL, or commuter line, were last raised in 2016. At present, each passenger is charged an initial fare of Rp3,000 for the first 25 kilometers and an additional Rp1,000 for the next 10 kilometers.
