Jokowi to Hold Internal Meeting Discussing Indonesia's Steps Over Iran-Israel Conflict Escalation

16 April 2024 11:31 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaPresident Joko Widodo or Jokowi will hold a limited meeting to discuss what steps the Indonesian government will take after Iran’s attack on Israel, the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto reported.

According to Airlangga, the meeting will be held today, Tuesday, 16 April 2024. "The President tomorrow (today) will hold an internal meeting on this matter (Iran-Israel conflict) and we will of course prepare Indonesia's steps," said Airlangga at the Golkar Party DPP Office, West Jakarta on Monday.

The current geopolitical climate is heating up, Airlangga said, highlighting the escalation of conflict between Iran and Israel. Therefore, Airlangga claimed that Indonesia needs political solidity, including between political parties.

"We have to ‘move on’ and form solidity between all political parties to face unusual challenges and uncertainties in the world," said the Golkar Party Chairman.

Airlangga said that the government has coordinated with the Indonesian embassies in Jordan and Iran after the drone attack on Israel. He also hopes the United Nations (UN) Security Council can immediately take steps "toward de-escalation, instead of escalation".

Airlangga also reassured that Indonesia does not need to worry that the Iran-Israel conflict will adversely affect the country's economy. "Our economic fundamentals are strong," said Airlangga.

Earlier, Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces launched more than 300 drones and missiles into Israeli territory from Iranian territory, more than 1,770 kilometers from the Jewish State.

The Iranian government has asserted that the operation was in retaliation for the Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate office in Damascus. The Israeli attack killed two Iranian Revolutionary Guard generals and five military advisers.

Iran declared that the military operation to attack Israel on April 14 had ended but threatened that if Israel retaliated, it would receive a much bigger response.

Chief of General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Major General Mohammad Bagheri said that “the operation is over and there’s no intention to continue”, as quoted by the Iranian news agency IRNA on Sunday, April 14, 2024.
