TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi claimed the management of Eid homecoming this year is better compared to last year’s homecoming season.
When asked if the number of accidents this year was higher, Jokowi said there were no overcrowded queues at terminals, stations, and even airports. "Any small problems are immediately resolved. I think good planning will lead to a good implementation," the President said after inspecting the homecoming post in Pasar Senen Station, Central Jakarta, on April 8, 2024.
The National Police recorded that on Sunday, April 7, 2024, there were 213 traffic accidents during Eid homecoming. Latest data showed over 23 people were killed in accidents while hundreds were injured.
"The material loss due to these accidents amounted to Rp539,350,000," said Head of the Public Information Bureau of the National Police Brigadier General Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko in his statement on Sunday, April 7, 2024.
In the 2023 Eid homecoming season, 276 people were killed in over 5,894 cases of traffic accidents. According to the then Head of the Public Information Bureau of the National Police Brigadier General Ahmad Ramadhan, the figure was a decline compared to the previous year. In 2022, there were 7,633 cases of traffic accidents during the Eid homecoming season. “With 1,121 fatalities,” Ramadhan said last year on May 16, 2023.
