TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Music festivals are commonly held outdoors with a long list of performers over the course of several days. There are hundreds of music festivals around the world, with some of the biggest attracting millions of festival-goers each year. Citing thesilentdiscocompany.co.uk, here are the ten biggest music festivals around the globe:

1. The Danube Island Festival

Donauinselfest, or the Danube Island Festival, is the largest open-air festival for music fans around the world. For three days, this festival hosts popular local and international artists across Europe. Donauinselfest presents various genres of music: rock, pop, rap, hip-hop, electronic music, folk, metal, blues, and swing. 

No ticket is required for this festival since the entry is free. The festival is held at the end of June every year. This year, Donauinselfest is slated for June 21-23, 2024. The average attendance is nearly 2.5 million each year. According to visitingvienna.com, this festival hosted over 1000 artists and 13 stages with around 700 hours of programming. 

2. Mawazine

Mawazine means rhythm of the world. This international music festival is held to promote Morocco's image and culture. The festival was started by King Mohammed IV's personal secretary. Various A-list artists such as Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Iggy Azalea, and David Guetta among others have performed on the Mawazine stage.

The festival is held annually in June, although it went through a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Mawzine is coming back in 2024 and will take place between June 21 and 29. In 2019, this festival attracted over 2.7 million people.  

3. Summerfest

Since its inception in 1968, Summerfest has developed an unrivaled reputation, consistently featuring hundreds of performances across 12 stages, throughout the 75-acre festival grounds along Lake Michigan. In 2023, it hosted over 600 artists and reported around 624,407 festival-goers. This year, Summerfest is set out to be held from June 20 to July 6, 2024.

4. Woodstock

Woodstock, also known as Pol’and’Rock, is a Polish festival named after the famous Woodstock festival in New York. This festival is a tribute to rock, pop, metal, and folk music. Woodstock typically brings on around 400,000 people each year. This year, Woodstock will be held on August 1-3, 2024.

5. Rock in Rio

Rock in Rio is a recurring music festival originating in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It later branched into other locations such as Lisbon, Madrid, and Las Vegas. In 2022, The biannual event will be held this year on September 13-22, 2024. The average attendance is around 700,000 people.

6. Coachella

Coachella is one of the most famous, prominent, and profitable festivals in the United States. Coachella features famous artists across various genres such as Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Bob Dylan, and Kendrick Lamar. The California festival takes place over a three-day weekend every year in July, at the Empire Polo Club. The festival is held in Indio, California, with an audience of around 500,000 people. This year, Coachella will be held on April 12-21, headlined by Lana Del Rey, Tyler, The Creator, and Doja Cat.

7. Sziget

Sziget is a massive island festival in Budapest, Hungary. Held annually in August in Budapest, this festival attracted over 420,000 people last year.  Different genres of music such as reggae, punk rock, and heavy metal are played over the course of seven days. This year, Sziget will be held on August 7-12, 2024. 

8. Essence

Started in 1994 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Essence, a magazine for African-American women, the event has grown into the largest music festival of African-American culture in the United States.

The music festival will be held on July 4-7 this year in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States, with an average attendance of 500,000 people. Essence festivals have a significant impact on the fashion industry and fashion history.

9. New Orleans Jazz Festival

As the oldest festival on this list, the New Orleans Jazz Festival is also one of the best music festivals in the world. In addition to art and music, the festival also features a variety of food, artisans, and clothing. Parades are also held at this festival. It is a significant tourist attraction and offers a contemporary and traditional feel.

The festival takes place annually from late April to early May, attracting 475,000 people. This year, the New Orleans Jazz Festival will be held from April 26 to May 5, 2024. 

10. Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC Las Vegas)

Electric Daisy Carnival is an electronic music festival held annually in June, in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. The event features all kinds of electronic DJs such as Calvin Harris, Harwell, and Zedd. EDC has been held in other locations such as Mexico, New York City, and Puerto Rico. The average attendance of the festival is around 400,000 people.
