TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Despite the UN Security Council Resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire, Israel continues to wage war against Gaza. Israel attacked the Gaza Strip under the pretext of suppressing Hamas, a Palestinian resistance group.

Long before the war flared up, Israel declared its independence on May 14, 1948. However, the United Nations (UN) only recognized its independence on May 11, 1949. At that time, Israel's membership in the UN was approved by a majority of the 58 member states with certain conditions.

Despite Israel's UN membership, until 2023 only 165 of the 193 UN member states recognized Israel's sovereignty. Meanwhile, most Arab and Muslim countries do not recognize Israel as a sovereign state. The following are the countries that do not recognize Israel.

Countries that do not recognize Israel

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine has led to political solidarity actions for Palestine, whose sovereignty is recognized by around 139 UN members. Now, there are still around 28 countries that do not recognize Israel, including:

  1. Afghanistan
  2. Indonesia
  3. Maldives
  4. Qatar
  5. Algeria
  6. Iran
  7. Mali
  8. Saudi Arabia
  9. Bangladesh
  10. Iraq
  11. Mauritania
  12. Somalia
  13. Brunei
  14. Kuwait
  15. Nigeria
  16. Syria
  17. Comoros
  18. Lebanon
  19. North Korea
  20. Tunisia
  21. Cuba
  22. Libya
  23. Oman
  24. Venezuela
  25. Djibouti
  26. Malaysia
  27. Pakistan
  28. Yemen

Countries that recognize Israel

Although there are still countries that do not recognize its sovereignty, there are also many countries that have recognized Israel. The United States became the first country to recognize Israel with President Harry Truman recognizing the Jewish interim government as the de facto authority of the new Jewish state.

There are 165 UN members, such as Albania, Egypt, Serbia, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Mexico, Spain, Belgium, the United States, and others, who recognize Israel as a sovereign state. These countries also carry out bilateral cooperation with Israel, such as in the fields of education, science, and the economy.

Not only Western countries, Arab countries also began to normalize relations with Israel. For example, Egypt signed a peace pact in 1979, followed by Jordan in 1994 and Mauritania in 1999.
