TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Volunteers from the NGO Medical Emergency Rescue Committee (MER-C) attempted to deliver humanitarian aid from Indonesia to Gaza on March 11. The aid trucks carrying 18 pallets of medicines and other medical equipment departed from a warehouse in Cairo and headed for the Rafah border crossing, the southernmost town in the Gaza Strip.
The team was in Cairo to directly oversee the purchase, packaging, and delivery of the aid from the Indonesian people through MER-C. “It's 8 pm Cairo time and we are in the warehouse where the aid, which is about 18 pallets of mediciness, is ready for the delivery process,” MER-C Team Leader, Arief Rachman, said in a statement received in Jakarta on March 11.
Arief hoped that the trucks carrying the aid would enter the Gaza Strip, calling on the Indonesian people to pray for the smooth passage of the aid trucks. He also hoped that the aid would arrive immediately to meet the need for medicine, which is becoming increasingly difficult for the people there to access essential medicines due to the Israeli blockade and aggression.
He also expressed his gratitude for the participation and support of the Indonesian people so that the MER-C team could continue to distribute various aid, both aid coming from Cairo, Egypt, and aid within Gaza, carried out by the MER-C team in southern and northern Gaza.
“We hope that this small effort can help our brothers and sisters in Gaza,” Arief remarked.
In addition to humanitarian aid, MER-C is committed to rebuilding the Indonesian Hospital in Bait Lahiya, North Gaza Strip, which was severely damaged during the Israeli attack and siege in November 2023.
Previously, MER-C had distributed food and flour to refugee camps in central and southern Gaza as part of its ongoing efforts to support the people of Gaza.
