TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The city of Jakarta will likely celebrate its 497th anniversary as the national capital for the last time on June 22, 2024. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo will reportedly pass a Decree on the relocation of the national capital in July 2024.
The government has also planned to hold the country’s Independence Day ceremony in the capital of Nusantara or IKN in East Kalimantan on August 17, 2024.
Dini Purwono, the President's Special Staff for legal affairs, said that Jakarta will remain the capital city until the issuance of a Presidential Decree on the transfer of the National Capital to IKN. She cited Article 39 of the IKN Law of 2022 as the basis for this statement.
"When the presidential decree will be issued depends entirely on the president's authority,” Dini told Tempo via a short message on Thursday, March 7, 2024.
Dini also made reference to Article 41 of the IKN Law which stated that Jakarta’s status as an autonomous region and a national capital will be nullified and declared invalid following the issuance of the Presidential Decree on IKN.
President Jokowi had earlier indicated that he would commence working from the new capital in July this year, once the airport and toll road infrastructure are operational.
IKN was expected to begin functioning as the national capital on August 17, 2024, coinciding with the 79th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Indonesia.
