Jokowi Says MSMEs Contributes 61 Percent to Indonesia's GDP

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi said that micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) contributed 61 percent to Indonesia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Jokowi also claimed that employment in the MSME sector reached 97 percent. 

"Therefore, it’s only right to pay special attention to MSMEs," Jokowi said during a speech at the BRI Microfinance Outlook 2024 event in Jakarta, on Thursday, March 7, 2024.

Jokowi highlighted the management of 740,000 BRILink agents, the BRI's cooperation services with customers for banking transactions. He also claimed to have found financing improvements to MSME products. 

Jokowi also gave examples of MSME products that have succeeded in dominating local and foreign markets, such as Mama Muda-branded crab crackers and Lontara-branded onion chili sauce. "These are the strengths of small businesses that contribute 61 percent to our economic GDP," he said. 

Furthermore, Jokowi also appreciated BRI for its support for MSMEs. "We can get the direction and strategy of what we build so that MSMEs can really compete internationally," he added. 

Not only Jokowi, BRI Microfinance Outlook 2024 was also attended by Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Minister of SOEs Erick Thohir, Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs Teten Masduki, and President Director of PT BRI Sunarso.
