TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - British singer Ed Sheeran gave away his signed special edition vinyl records during a visit to Santa Market in Jakarta before performing his Tour 2024 at the Jakarta International Stadium, on Saturday, March 2, 2024. He deliberately made the moment to celebrate the 7th anniversary of his Divide album.
The excitement in the air was palpable as the singer made his way to several music shops in the traditional market, distributing pieces of vinyl to some stores that sell cassettes and vinyl of across genres.
“So it is the seventh anniversary of Divide, so I thought I’d dropped off some signed vinyl at some record stores here in Jakarta,” he said via a video uploaded on his personal Instagram on Sunday, March 3.
Ed Sheeran shows interest in Indonesian indie music
In the video, the blonde-haired musician spoke enthusiastically about his love for music, as well as his interest in the development of the Indonesian music scene. During one encounter at a cassette shop in Pasar Santa, Ed Sheeran engaged in a conversation with the shop owner about the indie music from Bali, which had caught his interest.
“Can we listen to Indonesian music?” he asked.
As they perused the music discs on display, the singer was introduced to an Indonesian indie band, which has been actively making its musical debut since the 1990s. “This is an indie band from here, like the first printing of that album. This is music from the 90s, but still very active today,” said the shop owner.
He also shared with the shop owner that he has a collection of vinyl records that he listens to every morning, including those by Norah Jones and Black Sabbath.
"I listen to everything. I'm building a vinyl collection. We play vinyl every morning. I say it's a good morning ritual,” Ed Sheeran said.
