TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Each country has its own threat of natural disasters. Although it can be overcomed with security measures and good infrastructure, what is most important is the rate of risk of those countries in experiencing natural disasters.
Summarized from various sources, here are five countries with the lowest risk of experiencing natural disasters in the world:
1. Qatar
Quoted from The World Risk Report page, Qatar is the safest country in the world in terms of the dangers of natural disasters because its geographical position is protected from tropical cyclones. Apart from that, Qatar is also far from fault lines which makes this country free from the risk of earthquakes or risky volcanic activity.
According to the World Risk Index 2020, Qatar is the country with the lowest disaster risk in 2020 with a scale of 0.31 which is the best score. The country recorded the lowest scores for exposure (0.91) and vulnerability (8.32) indicators. However, Qatar showed a relatively high score regarding lack of adaptive capacity (64.58).
2. Saudi Arabia
Reporting from the World Atlas page, just like Qatar, even though natural disasters occur, this country is well equipped to maintain the safety of its population.
Quoting the Development Aid page, Saudi Arabia has an overall score of only 1.04 due to low exposure (2.89) and vulnerability (13.62). However, Saudi Arabia showed a relatively high score regarding lack of adaptive capacity (64.58).
3. Malta
This island is located south of Sicily, Mediterranean Sea. This country is often ranked as the second least likely country to experience natural disasters after Qatar. Unlike Qatar, Malta is quite close to the fault line of the European plate, but earthquakes are very rare in this country.
In the last 500 years, Malta has only experienced earthquakes 7 times. Malta also does not experience hurricanes and its infrastructure is well prepared to deal with natural disasters.
4. Singapore
According to the World Atlas page, Singapore is a unique country because other countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia protect it from natural disasters. If a tsunami wave is created, it must pass through one of these countries first. What affects Singapore is only from the northeast.
The country is also far from major fault lines, which also makes it safe from earthquakes. Although there are occasional hailstorms and floods, the country is well protected from the dangers of natural disasters.
5. Uruguay
Even though there are occasional floods and droughts, this country located in South America is also considered one of the safest countries in terms of natural disasters. Storms may be rare because the country is so far from the equator. Apart from that, there is no volcanic activity or earthquakes in Uruguay.
