TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has been entrusted once again with hosting the MXGP world motocross racing event, setting the stage for two back-to-back series in June and July 2024. The islands of Sumbawa and Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province are poised to welcome the world's top motocross riders, with races scheduled for June 30 at the Samota Circuit in Sumbawa, followed by a July 7 showdown at the Selaparang Circuit in Lombok.
This year, Indonesia joins Italy as the only nations awarded the honor of hosting the MXGP series twice in a single season. The events, marking the 10th and 11th series of the MXGP 2024 season, underscore Indonesia's capability to organize world-class sporting events, following the successful hosting of MotoGP and World Superbike races at the Mandalika Circuit.
MXGP Indonesia Chairman Zulkifliemansyah highlighted the significant economic impact and investment the MXGP has brought to the Samota region, which was previously underdeveloped.
"So in our opinion, previously there was nothing in Samota, with the MXGP, now there is certainty for investments. This is the spirit that we want to convey to other regions throughout Indonesia. If Sumbawa with all its limitations is able to organize a global event, Central Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, North Maluku, and so on should be able to present big events in their respective regions," Zulkifliemansyah said at a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Samota is an acronym for three regions, namely Saleh Bay, Moyo Island, and Mount Tambora.
Erwin Indrianto of the Indonesian Motor Association (IMI) emphasized the importance of hosting the MXGP for the development of Indonesian athletes, aiming to provide local talent with exposure to international competition and potentially securing wild card entries for them.
MXGP 2024 Ambassador Baim Wong expressed his pride in Indonesia being the sole Asian host for the MXGP series, which he views as a "blessing" and a unique opportunity to elevate Indonesia's global standing in the sports world.
"This time is very special because in Asia only Indonesia (is the host). So there are 19 countries in MXGP, Indonesia gets two rations. So for me it is a blessing, how we get the opportunity to raise the name of Indonesia in the eyes of the world," he said.
Last year's MXGP at the Selaparang Circuit saw Romain Febvre of the Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP clinch the championship, securing a total of 47 points across two races. As Indonesia gears up to host the upcoming MXGP series, the events are expected to not only showcase thrilling motocross action but also highlight Indonesia's capacity to stage major international events, promoting the country on the world stage.
