TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Directorate General of Customs and Excise, or DJBC of the Ministry of Finance, revealed an update on plans to implement excise on MBDK or packaged sweetened drinks.
"So, we can say that (Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin) supports the implementation of MBDK excise in 2024," said the Director General of Customs and Excise, Askolani, on Thursday.
Askolani explained that DJBC is coordinating with the Fiscal Policy Agency or BKF to implement MBDK excise this year. Apart from that, his side also coordinates across ministries/regulations to prepare regulations and review policies regarding packaged sweetened drinks.
"After that, the government will be able to announce the policy in time," said Askolani.
It was previously reported that the Ministry of Health confirmed that the MBDK excise regulation would pass this year, according to Dante Saksono Harbuwono on Monday, January 29.
As for the types of drinks that are subject to excise duty, he explained, they will be differentiated according to category, processing method, and sugar content.
Dante then explained that the excise implementation was due to the health risks the drinks possessed.
Based on data collected by the Ministry of Health, as many as 28.7 percent of Indonesian people have a pattern of consuming sugar, salt, and fat that exceeds the limits.
