TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Flights out of Singapore are expected to incur additional expenses than usual starting in 2026. This is due to the fact that travelers will be subjected to an extra levy for the country’s decarbonization and sustainable aviation fuel goals.
Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat stated that the government is committed to ensuring that all departing flights use 1 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2026. The ministry planned to escalate the figure to 3-5 percent by 2030.
At present, only 0.2 percent of the world's jet fuel is derived from renewable sources. Hence, the set target would make flights departing from Singapore more expensive.
Minister Chee introduced the green initiative as part of the Sustainable Air Hub blueprint on February 19 during the second edition of the Changi Aviation Summit at the Sands Expo and Convention Center. The blueprint comprises 12 key initiatives to diminish emissions from the aviation sector.
Consequently, travelers from Singapore to other countries may be subject to surcharges, which will vary based on factors such as flight distance and travel class.
“The use of SAF is a critical pathway for the decarbonization of aviation and is expected to contribute around 65 percent of the carbon emission reduction needed to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050,” the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) said as quoted from Travel and Leisure on Feb. 20.
CAAS will announce further details on the ticket prices in 2025, or before the policy implementation, after consulting with stakeholders.
