TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko Widodo or Jokowi confirmed today, Feb. 15, that he had met with presidential and vice presidential candidates Prabowo Subianto - Gibran Rakabuming Raka on Wednesday evening, February 14. After the polls closed, the quick count results from independent pollsters showed the pair were leading the race.
“We met in person last night,” he told journalists after opening the 2024 Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) at JIExpo Kemayoran in Jakarta on February 15.
He claimed the meeting was attended by four people but stopped short of detailing the names. “I don't need to mention them,” he briefly said.
The President also said that he had congratulated Prabowo and his eldest son, Gibran.
The Prabowo-Gibran pair, supported by the Advanced Indonesia Coalition, is ahead of the two rivals, Anies Baswedan - Muhaimin Iskandar and Ganjar Pranowo - Mahfud Md, with about 55-57 percent of the vote nationwide, according to quick count results.
Prabowo and Gibran had claimed victory in the presidential election on Wednesday night at Istora Senayan, Central Jakarta. In his speech, Prabowo said they were waiting for the official results from the General Election Commission (KPU), although the quick count showed him winning in one round.
The Defense Minister expressed gratitude and thanked the nation's founding fathers and former presidents for their contributions to the country. He stressed that he and Gibran would embrace all elements and powers when serving as president and vice president.
“This victory must be a victory for all Indonesian people,” Prabowo said.
