TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Relocated Rempang residents cast their votes in their former villages on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2024. The residents request for whoever is elected to resolve the Rempang land issue.
Relocated residents came to the polling station on buses and private vehicles, as well as a police car, which guarded the voting.
The head of RT (neighboring unit) 001 of Pasir Panjang Village, Muhammad Nasir, was one of the residents who agreed to be relocated by the government to proceed with the Rempang-Eco City project. He came on a bus. “Not only Pasir Panjang, there are residents who cast their votes in Sembulang Village,” he said.
Concerning the voting today, Nasir said he was only exercising his right as a citizen to participate in the election by voting, even if it’s not conducted in his current temporary housing.
“We were asked to move, indeed, but this is our electoral district,” he added.
Another relocated resident, Julianan, aged 34, hoped that whoever is elected as the next president resume the Rempang Eco-City project, since “they’re only required to continue the development.”
“This may be our last election [in Pasir Panjang], the next general elections would be at our new village,” Julianan added.
Siti Arini, another relocated resident, hoped that the government would provide a meaningful resolution for Rempang residents. “This is my personal opinion, if the relocation is revoked, Praise be to God, we’ll come back here. But if we do get relocated, we just want the government to provide adequate compensation,” said the 31-year-old woman.
