TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Executive Director of Parameter Politik Indonesia Adi Prayitno viewed Mahfud Md's plan to step down from his position as a Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs in a positive light. According to him, public officials ought to step down from office if running for the presidential election to avoid abuse of power and conflict of interest.
Adi also said that other public officials who are participating in the general elections should follow Mahfud's steps or, at least, take leave. "That is way more elegant and honorable," Adi said in a brief WhatsApp text on Monday, Jan. 29.
In addition, Mahfud Md's maneuver is seen as a form of distrust of the president's neutrality. "If he's indeed stepping down, the internal atmosphere between ministries is increasingly uncomfortable," he said.
Earlier, the Director of Moderate Islam Network Islah Bahrawi said the vice presidential candidate's mind is made up on this decision to step down from President Joko Widodo's administration. Mahfud Md has even asked to meet with the president, Islan said.
"Mr. Mahfud will directly announce his resignation during his meeting with the president," he said, Monday evening.
However, there is no certain date for the presumed meeting. Jokowi is currently on a working visit in Central Java and won't be back before Thursday.
Concerning the news about Mahfud stepping down, the coordinator of the presidential special staff Ari Dwipayana said on Monday that he has not received Mafud Md's resignation letter. Despite that, Ari said Jokowi would honor Mahfud's decision.
