TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled Friday, January 26, on the emergency measures requested by South Africa in the genocide case committed by Israel over its relentless bombardment on the Gaza Strip.
The world ordered Israel to take all measures to prevent acts of genocide in Gaza but stopped short of ordering a ceasefire as requested by South Africa.
South Africa brought the case to ICJ earlier this month, asking it to order an emergency suspension of Israel's devastating military campaign in the enclave which has killed more than 26,000 Palestinians and injured 64,487 others since October 7, 2023.
This ruling does not decide whether or not Israel has committed genocide, a verdict that could take years to decide.
The court also ordered Israel to act swiftly and decisively to enable the provision of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance in the Gaza Strip.
