Indonesia to Face Australia in Asian Cup Round of 16

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia will take on Australia in the round of 16 at the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at 6:30 p.m. Jakarta time at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium. The team qualified for the knockout stage by finishing as one of the top four third-placed teams in the group stage of the preliminary competition.

The 1-1 draw in the Group F match between Kirgizstan and Oman on Thursday pushed the Merah Putih team coached by Shin Tae-yong to qualify for the round of 16 albeit with only one score.

Indonesia finished third in Group D. The Garuda squad only managed a 1-0 win over Vietnam. In their other two matches, the team lost to Iraq (3-1) and Japan (3-1).

Australia claimed the top spot in Group B. The Socceroos recorded two wins over India and Syria, as well as a draw against Uzbekistan in the Group B preliminary round.

The upcoming match would not be the first for Indonesia and Australia. The two met for the first time on November 17, 1967, in a friendly match that ended with Australia winning 2-0.
