TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Geolocation specialist agency TomTom has released the TomTom Traffic Index 2023. Jakarta is ranked 30th worldwide as the most congested city.
The index was based on more than 600 million data from cars and smartphone navigation system. In each city, TomTom calculated the average time spent per mile out of the time required to travel millions of miles in the entirety of its network throughout 2023.
Based on the report, the average time needed to travel 10 kilometers in Jakarta is 23 minutes, with an average maximum speed of just 21 kilometers per hour.
Responding to the result, the head of Jakarta transportation office Syarfin Liputo said the traffic congestion in Jakarta was influenced by the number of governmental development projects. From transportation projects such as MRT and LRT to national strategic projects.
Some of these projects, according to Syafrin, caused traffic congestion in Jakarta.
However, he also believed that there were some improvements compared to the previous year.
"It's been improved, from 29th to 30th (the TomTom ranking)," he said on Monday. According to him, the improvement is caused by the efforts carried out by the government.
These efforts include implementing a one-way traffic policy, an intelligent transport system at red lights, and closing down 31 U-turns.
He is optimistic that the series of efforts will improve future traffic. "Hopefully the massive improvement in traffic will continue this year in Jakarta," he concluded
