TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Presidential candidate number 1 Anies Baswedan promises to initiate a law to eradicate age discrimination in hiring. According to him, age discrimination is an odd hiring practice.
"We disagree with age limitation [in hiring practices]. If God is willing, we will change the law so both public and private companies would be the same," he said during the Desak Anies event in Ambon on Monday, January 15, 2024.
The statement was relayed in response to the ageism phenomenon in hiring. Ageism, or age-based discrimination, even occurs in state-owned enterprises or SOEs and other employment hiring opportunities.
Anies questioned the reason for age discrimination, echoed by fresh graduates of colleges. He defended the young generation, claiming that they are offering a future. "I'm speaking to college students, if you got asked about experiences, just answer that you could find an experienced older person. But if [the hiring manager and company] aims for a future, the young generation has it. Older generations talk about the past," he said.
Aside from age, Anies also highlighted discriminatory hiring practices by limiting the opportunities of certain ethnicities and beliefs. "Discrimination based on gender, socio-culture, or religion must be eradicated for equal opportunity including based on age," he added.
Hiring that required the candidates to have certain facilities such as private vehicles is also troubling."Like a laptop, for example, what if [the candidate] could not afford it?" he said.
Last, Anies Baswedan also reflects on hiring that disallows expression of beliefs. "Wearing clothing based on beliefs is a right. No one can prohibit that," he concluded.
