TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned commuter railway operator PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KCI) or KAI Commuter, a subsidiary of PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), reported that commuter lines and local trains on Java Island served 331,004,965 passengers throughout 2023.
“[The number of passengers] in 2023 almost matches that in 2019,” KAI Commuter director Asdo Artriviyanto said in a press conference at the KAI Commuter Headquarters, Juanda Station, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, January 11.
He mentioned that there were 336,274,343 passengers in 2019. The figures in 2020 and 2021 declined significantly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which were 155,378,672 and 131,148,578, respectively. In 2022, the number was 242,666,167 as restrictions on public activity began to be eased.
The 2023 figure did not exceed or match the 2019 figure because the work-from-home or work-from-anywhere policy was enforced from the beginning of 2023 and people still preferred to use private vehicles.
Currently, KAI Commuter manages several commuter lines and local trains reaching 1,326 train trips. In 2023, the Greater Jakarta Commuter Line operated 1,129 train trips daily, Bandung 2 Commuter Line operated 60 trips daily, Region 8 Commuter Line operated 60 trips daily, Merak Commuter Line ran 14 trips daily, Region 6 Commuter Line ran 32 trains daily, and Soekarno Hatta Airport Train served 56 train trips daily.
Asdo confirmed that KAI Commuter officially managed the Soekarno Hatta Airport Train starting January 2023, which marked the beginning of the company managing commercial trains. Currently, the company manages 95 percent of PSO trains and five percent of commercial trains.
