Transportation Minister to Visit South Korea, China; Discuss Railways, Aviation Cooperations

9 January 2024 14:44 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi will head to South Korea and China from January 9 to 13, 2024 to discuss several collaborations in the railways and aviation sectors. Those collaborations include the plan to develop light rail transit or LRT in Bali, autonomous rail transit or ART in the Nusantara capital city (IKN), and high-tech railways communication and signaling network.

"[The collaboration] also includes the potential for commercial airplanes cooperation," said the minister in a statement on Tuesday, Jan. 9 in Jakarta.

Budi Karya explained that his side will meet South Korea's Vice Minister of Infrastructures and Transportation Sangwoo Park and several other stakeholders, such as the higher ups of Korea National Railway (KNR) and Eximbank to further discuss the phase 1 of LRT Bali development from Ngurah Rai Airport to Central Park. LRT Bali, he said, will become Bali's first railway-based mass transportation and will hopefully become the solution to the city's traffic congestion issue.

"We are expecting the feasibility study that was started in January 2023 to finish in the middle of this year," the minister said.

After his business in South Korea, Budi Karya will kick start his visit to China to meet its Transportation Minister Li Xiaopeng and the executives of China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC). This meeting will discuss the follow-up to the cooperation plan of IKN's ART development.

The minister will also meet with Huawei leaders to explore cooperation potential in smart and high-tech railways system. Huawei was the company behind Whoosh high-speed train communication network.

In addition to railways cooperation, the minister will also meet with leaders of Commercial Aircraft Corp of China (COMAC) for potential investment in aviation sector. COMAC is the main supplier of aircraft for domestic airlines Transnusa.

During this working visit, Minister Budi Karya is accompanied by Railways DG Risal Wasal and Aviation DG Maria Kristi Indah Murni.
