TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The General Elections Supervisory Agency or Bawaslu claimed to have found 204 internet content in violation of General Elections Law and ITE Law throughout the campaigning period so far. Member of Bawaslu Lolly Suhenty mentioned that the findings are based on cyber supervision, searches through the Intelligent Media Monitoring (IMM), and analysis of public reports.

"Out of the 204 content, some are violating Article 280 (1) (c) of the General Elections Law in conjunction with Article 28 (1) and (2) of the ITE Law," Lolly said in a statement on Thursday, January 4, 2024, in Jakarta.

Lolly mentioned that the violations are compiled into three groups; hate speech, politicization of SARA (race, ethnicity, religion, and group), and hoaxes.

Hate speech dominated the violation with 194 cases, followed by the politicization of SARA with 9 content, and hoax with 1 content.

The majority of content violations were posted on Instagram with 72 content or 35 percent out of the total violation, followed by Facebook with 69 content, X with 54 content, TikTok with 7 content, and YouTube with 2 content.

"Based on the target, the majority of the content targeted the running presidential pairs," Lolly explained. Around 196 content were targeting the contenders of the 2024 general elections while 6 targeted Bawaslu and 2 targeted the General Elections Commission (KPU).

Bawaslu, Lolly added, has taken down 185 content found in violation of the law in coordination with the Ministry of Communication and Informatics.

Bawaslu also urged citizens of Indonesia to report any content suspected of containing hate speech, hoax, and politicization of SARA relating to the 2024 general elections.

The reports shall be directed to Bawaslu's e-mail at medsos@bawaslu.go.id, hotline at 08119810123, the website Jarimu Awasi Pemilu, or directly at posts provided by Bawaslu.

Bawaslu stated that the agency will intensify its coordination with relevant stakeholders to tackle the issue.
