TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police traffic department recorded around 2,500 vehicles passing the Cipali toll road every hour during the year-end holiday return flow. According to the police, no traffic diversion is needed yet as it is still manageable.
"The traffic diversion systems [are implemented] if a minimum of 2,700 vehicles are passing by every hour," said the traffic department chief Police Inspector General Aan Suhanan as quoted by Antara today, Tuesday, Jan. 2.
However, Aan claimed that the police will keep monitoring the traffic situation during the return flow for the Christmas and New Year holidays. The reason, Aan went on, was because many vehicles heading from the East to the West have yet to come back.
According to data, around one million vehicles from Jakarta join in the homecoming flow toward other regions in Java. Hence, the police are anticipating a spike in vehicles during the return flow.
"We have prepared a contraflow system in the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road from KM (kilometer) 72 to KM 47. However, [contraflow] has not been implemented on Cipali toll road since the flow is still smooth," he said.
No less than 140,000 vehicles are expected to re-enter Jakarta through the meeting point of Cikampek and Cipularang toll roads at KM 66. Over 20,000 of those have already re-entered Jakarta during this return flow period.
