Earthquake Jolts Sukabumi This Morning

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bogor Disaster Management Agency or BPBD Bogor, West Java reported two tectonic earthquakes hitting Sukabumi with 2.2-magnitude and 4.6-magnitude at 06:35 a.m. WIB (Western Indonesia Time) on Thursday, Dec. 14. 2023.
"After one hour, there are still no impacts reported by the officers or residents. Hopefully there was no damage," said the head of BPBD Bogor City Hidayatullah this morning.
Hidayatullah urged residents to remain vigilant of disasters during this rainy season, to ensure their buildings are safe from crumbling down, and to avoid sheltering under trees during rainfall.
The head of the Data and Information Center of the Climatology Station of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency or BMKG Hadi Saputra also confirmed the 4.6-magnitude earthquake in Sukabumi Regency.
According to BMKG, the epicenter of the quake was located at 6.76 Southern Latitude and 106.53 Longitude West, or 25 kilometers northwest of Sukabumi at 5-kilometer depth inland.
The head of BMKG Tangernag Hartono explained that the earthquake was shallow and caused by an active fault activity.
Based on the Shakemap by BMKG, the earthquake was felt in Pamijahan, Bogor Regency on a III-IV MMI intensity scale, meaning the vibration was similar to a passing truck and caused windows and doors to rattle.
Meanwhile, in Panggarangan, Bayah, Kalapanunggal, and Cilograng the earthquake was felt on a III MMI intensity scale while in Ciputat, Tangerang, the earthquake was felt on a II-III MMI intensity scale.
The earthquake was felt on an II MMI intensity scale by people in Ratu Port, however, no damage was reported relating to the earthquake.
From Dec. 6 to 14, BMKG recorded 50 earthquakes occurring in the same location. "Residents are urged to remain calm and not easily affected by unconfirmed information," Hartono concluded.
