TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A shallow earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 rocked West Sumbawa Regency in Indonesia's West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province. The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said that the earthquake at a depth of 27 km did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.
"By looking at the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a type of shallow earthquake due to plate subduction activity," BMKG's head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, said in Jakarta on Tuesday, December 12.
He added that the results of the source mechanism analysis show that the earthquake has an upward movement mechanism or thrust fault.
The earthquake was struck at 07:37 West Indonesia Time (WIB) at 10.56 south latitude and 116.95 east longitude, which is 200 km southeast onshore of West Sumbawa.
"So far, there have been no reports of the impact of damage caused by the earthquake," he said.
Daryono added that as of 08:00, BMKG monitoring results had not shown any aftershock activity. He appealed to the public to remain calm and not be influenced by news whose truth cannot be justified.
