BMKG Forecasts Rain in Indonesia's Big Cities Today

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency or BMKG forecasted rain to pour over several big cities in Indonesia today, Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023.
Citing the official website of BMKG, the capital cities with the potential for drizzle this afternoon are Yogyakarta, Jambi, Pontianak, Palangkaraya, Samarinda, Pangkal Pinang, Tanjung Pinang, Bandar Lampung, Ambon, Mataram, Pekanbaru, Makassar, and Kendari.
Meanwhile, Banda Aceh and Mamuju will have a medium rain in the afternoon with an air humidity level of 70 to 95 percent.
BMKG also warned people of heavy rain with lightning in Banjarmasin and Kupang.
Several cities are forecasted to have partly cloudy weather this afternoon, namely Denpasar, Serang, Yogyakarta, Jakarta, Gorontalo, Semarang, Mataram, Manado, Medan, Surabaya, Tarakan, Kupang, Pekanbaru, and Palembang.
According to BMKG, cloudy weather will greet Bandung, Jayapura City, Manokwari, and Padang this afternoon, while Ternate will have thicker clouds.
Earlier, BMKG also recommended coastline communities to beware of 4-meter high waves potential today. "[BMKG] urges people living and conducting activities in the coastlines to remain vigilant of high waves," said the head of the maritime meteorology center of BMKG Eko Prasetoyo.
He said that the wind in the northern part of Indonesia generally moves from northwest to northeast with 4 to 20 knots velocity, while in the southern part of Indonesia, the wind moves from northeast to southeast with 4 to 20 knots velocity.
