TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) mentioned that post-mining reclamation is an effort to maintain the stability of the land and a way to absorb manpower.

"The environmental impact of mining must be minimized, for example with conducting post-mining reclamation," said the head of communication and public information bureau of the EMR ministry Agus Cahyono Adi in Jakarta on Friday, Dec. 8.

According to him, post-mining reclamation is a series of activities to recover mine-based environmental disruption by rehabilitating the land, revegetation, land maintenance, and supervision.

The government regulated post-mining reclamation under EMR Minister Regulation No. 7 of 2014 on reclamation and EMR Minister Regulation No. 26 of 2018 on implementation of the good mining practices and supervision of mineral and coal mining.

One of Indonesia's coal mining companies PT Berau Coal expressed its commitment to sustainable post-mining reclamation. One of which was repurposing the mining area into a sports area, especially a golf course.

According to the Mine Closure Department Head of Berau Coal Doddy Herika W., the golf course was part of the Future Development Area or Kembang Mapang 56 built on the former mining area in the Binungan site's Block 5 and 6 closed in 2005.

"The golf course is part of Kembang Mapan integrated with other post-mining programs such as farms, plantation, outbound, fisheries, and others. Thus it would become a sports center, recreation center, and a new economic source for Berau Regency," he said.

The integrated area also turned the mining void into a lake, Doddy explained. The 28 hectares of lake was used by surrounding residents as a source for water, fisheries, and water sports.

The reclamation program was also used for livestock that engaged silvopasture management system, an area to integrate livestock and foster forest plants.
