TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Officers of the Indonesian Military (TNI) were deployed to Bekasi's Bantargebang Market to clean up garbage and waste that had been piling up for months. Members of the Military District Command (Kodim) 0507 Bekasi went to the location on Thursday morning, 7 December 2023.
This activity was held together with the Bekasi City Government, the Police, and the local community.
"In total, 308 people consisting of members of the TNI, the police, and members of the public are here today," Kodim 0507 Bekasi commander Col. Arm Rico Sirait told reporters.
At Bantargebang Market, heaps of garbage could be seen piling up in several corners of the market, welcoming everyone with a very strong, foul smell. There were even piles of rubbish that had not been picked up for months.
According to Rico, the market is rundown because it is not yet operating 100 percent due to ongoing renovations. "The second floor and third floor are being renovated, so downstairs, it's quite filled with garbage," he said.
The TNI and police personnel, as well as members of the public, also cleaned water channels and planted trees as steps to prevent flooding.
"The TNI, the police and the Bekasi City Government encourage the community to have more awareness in maintaining cleanliness," Rico said.
