TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - COVID-19 infections have increased in many countries, coupled with an increase in influenza cases during the rainy season and winter in subtropical countries.
Respiratory-related illnesses tend to increase in December, especially among people who travel together or live in the same house. People who are feeling under the weather may want to spend the year-end holiday at home.
If you are well enough to travel, here is what you need to know about COVID-19 and influenza and how to prevent it, as reported by USA Today.
Influenza and COVID-19 share many symptoms in common, including fever, headache, chills, cough, fatigue, sore throat, diarrhea, nausea, and/or vomiting.
However, there are more common symptoms between the two. More common symptoms of influenza are headache, body aches, and nasal congestion, while more common symptoms of COVID-19 include shortness of breath and loss of taste and smell.
These symptoms can range from no symptoms or asymptomatic to mild to severe. It can be difficult to diagnose based on the symptoms alone, so tests may be done. It is also possible to have both conditions at the same time.
To stay safe from influenza and COVID-19 during the winter or rainy season, it is highly recommended to stay away from anyone who is sick or has symptoms, wash hands often with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer, and wear a face mask in crowded places.
