TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan or Zulhas visited Johar Baru Market in Central Jakarta today, Dec.4, 2023. He claimed that food prices are fairly stable except for chilis.

"[Food prices] are stable including rice, which is still quite high. But indeed, chili prices are still high," he said.

According to the minister, rice prices are currently decreasing but still quite high at Rp13,000 per kilogram. Meanwhile, rice's highest retail price (HET) is Rp10,900 per kilogram. This condition occurred, Zulhas said, because it's not harvest season yet.

Egg prices, on the other hand, are at around Rp28,000 per kilogram. That, in addition to chicken prices at Rp35,000 per kilogram, is in line with the government-mandated suggested retail prices.

On Monday, Tempo's observation found that food prices in Jakarta are rising. Citing Bank Indonesia's record through the Strategic Food Prices Information Center, the biggest increase in food prices occurred in red chilis.

It was reported that the price of said red chilis rose by 25.27 percent compared to the previous day to Rp103,350 per kilogram, followed by a 13.5 percent increase of curly red chilis to Rp98,350 per kilogram. Additionally, green cayenne chili prices increased by 4.83 percent to Rp71,650 per kilogram, and red cayenne chili prices increased by 4.69 percent to Rp111,650 per kilogram.

Other commodities to have the prices increased are garlic with a 3.81 percent increase, shallot with a 1.36 percent increase to Rp37,150 per kilogram, and broiler chicken priced at Rp34,650 per kilogram, an increase of 1.91 percent compared to the previous day.
