TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi is heading to Dubai, UAE on Thursday, Nov. 30 to attend the climate COP28 Summit. The Summit is scheduled to be held from Nov. 30 to Dec. 12, 2023.
COP28 is a climate conference initiated by the UN and will be kickstarted by financial reports from each country based on the 2015 Paris Agreement. The purpose is to limit emissions to prevent an average global temperature increase above 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Jokowi stated that he would convey Indonesia's experience and stress the importance of global collaboration in climate financing. "And the importance of inclusive transition to ensure sustainable development and welfare in developing countries," he said in a press release received on Thursday, Nov. 30.
The dialogue in UAE, the world's biggest oil producer, is a critical opportunity for world leaders to accelerate the action against climate change. However, they are currently at an impasse on the usage of fossil fuels.
Indian PM Narendra Modi and UK PM Rishi Sunak are expected to attend the conference. Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden will be represented by his VP Kamala Harris.
"A real commitment must be strengthened especially the commitment of developed countries on climate financing in order to achieve the net zero emissions target," Jokowi said.
The US in general supported the formation of a new financing system to support developing countries to tackle damages caused by climate change. However, the administration wanted the agreement to lay down clearly that no nation is obliged to pay for it. The statement also included the support for gradual elimination of fossil fuel utilization.
According to the data of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, carbon emissions in Indonesia reached 1.84 gigatons in 2019, declining to 1.05 gigatons in 2020, 1.14 gigatons in 2021, and 1.20 gigatons in 2022.
In addition to attending the COP28 Summit, the president also will attend presidential events concerning food system transformation, the G77 and China Meeting, and several bilateral meetings.
