TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The General Elections Commission or KPU will hold a Declaration of Peaceful General Elections this afternoon. "That's true, [the declaration] will be held at two in the afternoon," Idham Holik, the commissioner of KPU said via text.
The declaration will be attended by the three pairs of running presidential candidates; Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar, Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka, and Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD.
The head of the technical division of KPU mentioned that there will only be limited invitees during this declaration, a divergent from previous general elections fare such as the candidate registrations.
Idham said earlier that the declaration is intended to spread the message that a peaceful political situation must be realized by all participants of the general elections and the general public during the campaign period.
"A peaceful general elections campaign will not only reflect the quality of electoral integrity but also the maturity of Indonesia's electoral democracy," he said.
According to Idham the declarations also mandated voters to ensure peaceful general elections. Therefore, KPU urged voters to actively reject hoaxes, disinformation, misinformation, and political polarization over ethnicity, race, religion, and groups, as well as hate speech.
Previously, the declaration was scheduled to be held in the Gelora Bung Karno area and invited more than 65,000 people. However, the weather forecast forced KPU to move the event to its own yard.
The Declaration of Peaceful General Elections will be held a day before the campaign period starts. The campaign period will commence from Nov. 28, 2023, to Feb.10, 2024.
