TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Four-day truce between Israel and the Palestinian resistance group Hamas has started today, Friday, Nov. 24, 2023, in the Gaza Strip in Palestine. The temporary pause of fire exchange between Israeli forces and Hamas opened the opportunity for a hostage exchange and entrance of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
The truce started at 07:00 a.m. local time or 12:00 p.m. Jakarta time today.
Israel estimated around 239 Israelis were held hostage by the resistance group Hamas following the attack on Oct. 7.
"The first batch of civilian hostages will be handed over at approximately 4:00 p.m. (local time) on [Friday]," said Qatar Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari during a press conference in Doha.
He added that 50 hostages will be freed during the four-day truce. "The first group of hostages include 13 women and children," he said.
Israel has bombarded Gaza relentlessly for the past month, following the Oct.7 attack. At least 14,854 Palestinians were killed during this bombardment campaign by Israel, according to the press bureau in the besieged enclave on Thursday.
Among Palestinian deaths were 6,150 children and more than 4,000 women, with at least 36,000 injured, the press bureau reported.
Meanwhile, Israel reported that its death toll reached 1,200 people during the Oct.7 attack.
