TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi will attend the OIC Summit in Saudi Arabia this Sunday, November 12, 2023. This summit will discuss the escalation of attacks in the Gaza Strip and its humanitarian impacts.
"Inshaa Allah, tomorrow evening I will head to Saudi Arabia to attend the OIC Summit to specifically discuss Gaza," Jokowi said in between his visit to Purwakarta, West Java on Thursday.
From Riyadh, Jokowi will embark to the US to meet President Joe Biden at the White House on Monday, November 13, 2023. The US is one of Israel's persistent allies, staking a great influence in the present conflict.
The month-long attacks in Gaza have killed more than 10,000 people, including children and women. "From the OIC [Summit], I have been appointed to [meet] and tell President Joe Biden to stop the Hamas-Israel war," he said.
On several occasions, Jokowi expressed condemnation over the strikes that killed civilians in Gaza. Indonesia also continued to call for a humanitarian ceasefire to make way for humanitarian aid to enter the besieged Palestinian enclave.
Indonesia's call for a ceasefire is heavily related to the safety of six Indonesian nationals living in Gaza. Three of them, part of Muhammad Husein's family, awaited evacuation while the rest were volunteers at the Indonesian Hospital in Gaza.
The three volunteers have decided to stay in Gaza and continue their humanitarian work, refusing to be evacuated.
