TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) member Burhanuddin said the capital city needs approximately 30,000 independent individuals to serve as supervisors in each polling station or TPS of the 2024 election.
He emphasized that independent parties are necessary to prevent fraud during the election, and one of the parties expected to participate is university students.
“Students have unquestionable intellectual capacity. They are independent, not involved in political parties, and have honesty and integrity that cannot be bought by election participants,” Burhanuddin said on Thursday, Nov. 2.
He explained that after the election rules were amended, students could now participate as supervisors at polling stations.
The election law now allows people who are at least 21 years old to participate in the election supervisory committees at the sub-district, district, and as polling station supervisors. If this requirement cannot be met, people 17 years of age may be recruited as polling station supervisors.
Recruitment will begin 23 days before the election on February 14, 2024.
Burhanuddin recalled several cases of fraud at polling stations in previous elections. In the 2019 election, he said there was a chairman of the Polling Station Working Committee (KPPS) in Cakung who was believed to have damaged more than 100 ballot papers.
In the 2017 election, the right to vote was exercised more than twice in Kemayoran and Gambir. Burhanuddin said that apart from conducting a revote, the person who committed the violation faced criminal charges.
