TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The General Election Commission (KPU) member, Mochammad Afifuddin, said the agency decided to hold a total of five debates for the 2024 Presidential Election, with three debates for the presidential candidates and two debates for the vice presidential candidates. He stressed that the agency’s decision is non-negotiable.
“So, it will be five debates in total, exactly the same as in the 2019 (Presidential Election),” Afif said at a discussion event on environmental and climate change issues in the 2024 election in Jakarta, as quoted from Antara, on Thursday, Nov. 2.
Afif said the debates would be held between November 20, 2023, and February 10, 2024, during the campaign period. He claimed that the agency has not yet fully prepared as discussions with the campaign team of each pair of candidates were still ongoing. Besides, the KPU has not yet announced the official participants of the upcoming presidential election.
Afif also said the agency was still mulling over the locations. “We will surely coordinate it with each candidate to see if there are any objections. For example, if we propose it in a city outside Jakarta,” he added.
Environmental issues are also considered as one of the topics to be discussed in the presidential and vice presidential debates. “We haven't made a decision yet, but we are 99.9 percent sure that environmental issues will be included as one of the priority topics,” Afif said.
The KPU has received the registration of three potential presidential and vice presidential candidates for the 2024 presidential election.
