Political Campaigns at Tourist Sites Not Restricted, Says Sandiaga Uno

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno confirmed that conducting political campaigns in tourist destinations is not prohibited. He even called on the public to engage in political activities at tourist sites.

“There are no restrictions on campaigning in tourist destinations. In fact, we must encourage as many democratic activities as possible in leading tourist destinations,” Sandiaga said after the US-Indonesia Investment Summit 2023 at Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Jakarta on Tuesday, October 24.

According to him, political activities in tourist destinations can be used as a promotional tool to attract visitors. “So while participating in a democracy activity, people can have a healing and refreshing time, so it won't be too tense,” the minister added.

Nevertheless, he appealed for political activities to be carried out while complying with the applicable rules and policies of each tourist destination.

When asked about the attributes of political activities that could spoil the beauty of tourist sites, Sandiaga claimed he was not worried. According to him, political advertisements can be installed in LEDs. “Or [political parties] can also set up a stage for music shows, but everything must be of our creative economy and cultural products,” he said.

According to him, political activities carried out in the 2024 elections can open up business opportunities and jobs for creative economy players in Indonesia. Sandiaga Uno earlier claimed that the campaign activities could actually boost the potential of the creative economy.
