TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Golkar Party officially announced its proposal for Gibran Rakabuming Raka to run as vice presidential candidate accompanying Prabowo Subianto in the 2024 election.
The decision was made by Golkar Chairman Airlangga Hartarto in the party's national meeting on Saturday, October 21, 2023. "[Golkar officially] proposes and supports Mas Gibran Rakabuming Raka to be the running mate of Pak Prabowo," he said.
He revealed that Golkar's proposal for Gibran to be the vice presidential candidate was to attract potential young voters.
"The number of [Indonesian] youth generation is 53 percent, we hope Mas Gibran can take advantage of this demographic bonus," Airlangga said, adding that it will give color to the 2024 election.
"We see that other presidential and vice presidential candidates are over 50 years old," he said.
Airlangga mentioned that Indonesia has a history of being led by young people in the post-independence era. "At that time, Sutan Sjahrir was under 40 and was successful with Soekarno-Hatta," he remarked.
