Gibran Rakabuming Responds to Court's Rulings on Presidential Age Limit

17 October 2023 15:44 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Solo - Solo Mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka has finally spoken up about the Constitutional Court's rulings on the minimum age requirement for presidential and vice presidential candidates rendered on Monday, Oct. 16. He revealed plans to meet with high-ranking officials of the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) to discuss the matter.

With the Constitutional Court's ruling that candidates under the required age of 40 can seek the presidency or vice presidency in the upcoming February 2024 election if they have served or are serving in an elected regional office, Gibran believed that the chance does not belong to him alone.

The eldest son of President Jokowi stressed that young leaders in some regions have the same opportunity. “It’s not only me who has the opportunity,” he told journalists at Solo City Hall on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

He mentioned Kendal Regent Dico Ganinduto, East Java Governor Emil Dardak, Medan Mayor Bobby Nasution who is his brother-in-law, and other regional heads.

When asked about the planned meeting with the PDIP, the 36-year-old man refused to disclose the details, including the location. “Let’s wait for tomorrow. Because this is not just a personal problem, we need to consult with many people first.”

He was also reluctant to confirm whether he had held talks with leaders of other political parties. “Later,” he replied shortly.

Gibran Rakabuming Raka has not yet publicly declared an intention to run for vice president in the 2024 elections. However, he has been mentioned as a potential running mate for presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto.
