Jokowi to Attend Belt and Road Forum in a Visit to China

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo embarked on his visit to Beijing, China on Monday, October 16, 2023. The president will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in a bilateral meeting and attend the Belt and Road Forum.
"A number of priority issues will be discussed with China, including Indonesia's export boost, improving investment, and development of food resilience," he said in a press release.
The Chinese government will hold the Belt and Road Forum on October 17-18, 2023. The forum is a foreign and economic policy initiative intended to strengthen Beijing's influence through a wide and thorough program of infrastructure development in all countries across the route.
Xi Jinping is scheduled to inaugurate the forum with the theme "High-Quality Belt and Road Cooperation: Together for Common Development and Prosperity".
Jokowi last met with the Chinese President in Chengdu on July 25. During the visit at the time, several cooperation documents were agreed upon, including the protocol to open access from agricultural product markets, plant breeding research and development agreement, to the health sector agreement.
Additionally, Jokowi also met with several business actors in China, bagging an investment commitment from the multinational company Xinyi Group, to develop a glass factory in Rempang. To this day, the project in Rempang Island is met with a massive rejection from local residents.
The president did not elaborate further on what his agenda would be during his two-day visit to China.
Jokowi is accompanied by several of his ministers, including Ad-Interim Coordinating Minister of Maritime and Investment Affairs Erick Thohir and Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan.
After concluding the business in China, Jokowi will head to Saudi Arabia on October 18 and head back to Indonesia on October 21.
